Masque Sound Turns Up the Volume for Indie-rock Musical, Lizard Boy

FOH Online Magazine | June 27, 2023

In designing the sound for Lizard Boy, Heard wanted to make sure that he could get as big of a sound as possible from the budget-conscious equipment package Masque Sound was providing. “Lizard Boy is a shockingly big, little show,” adds Heard. “The show features a cast of three people who all sing and play many instruments including guitar, ukelele, cello, piano and percussion. Even though it’s a small Off-Broadway show and budgets were tight, we still needed the equipment that could deliver a powerful performance capable of capturing my design vision.”

A handsomely designed production (projections by Ms. Arnold, costumes by Whitney Locher, lighting by Isabella Byrd), it also sounds terrific (music direction by Ben Moss, orchestrations by Mr. Mills and Mr. Moss, sound design by Kevin Heard).

- Laura Collins-Hughes, The New York Times

Kevin Heard's heart-pounding sound design conjures the air raids and artillery fire that make those helmets necessary.

- TheaterMania

Although the horrors of war are acknowledged—sound designer Kevin Heard conjures ear-shattering shelling, and there's a poignant scene with a German POW—they are rarely dwelled on. Musical instruments stand in for weapons, and the evocative images that Lianne Arnold projects on her multilevel pegboard set are never graphic. The Hello Girls is painted in broad, sometimes sentimental strokes, but it is undeniably inspirational.

From Here to Eternity
Skylight Music Theatre, 2024

“Visually, one of the best moments is the bombing itself as chaos erupts in slow motion and dramatic lighting. The jarring sounds of the bombing itself should come with a PTSD warning. It’s so thunderous, you can feel the rumble. Kudos to sound designer Kevin Heard for some truly affecting audio.

The Da Vinci Code
Ogunquit Playhouse, 2023

There’s a cinematic feel to the production as sound designer, Kevin Heard, provides an underscoring soundtrack to a few key scenes in the production… a nice added touch.

Yes, I Can Say That!
Off-Broadway, 2023

Sharply timed projections (Shawn Duan), lights (Anshuman Bhatia), and sound (Kevin Heard) cues support Gold's routine without overwhelming it.

Grease
Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival, 2019

This production has a talented, energetic cast, led by director Igor Goldin, with Corinne Aquilina’s orchestra supporting the singing effectively (its location above the stage helps the acoustics, while sound design is by the aptly named Kevin Heard).
